Is there a way to have alternative layouts/templates for collection pages?

Hey Nicole! Thanks this was indeed very helpful.
Unfortunately I’d rather not go this route - because it seems like the content is still rendered in the DOM and just hidden using CSS. Which is not just super bad for SEO, but also super bad for network performance - because we would end up with quite a lot of hidden content in our case. 
I was thinking of just using basic pages but I can’t find a way to link to internal pages from a collection field.
