Fixed transparent vertical nav bar

I am trying to create a fixed transparent vertical nav bar shown in the exmaple below

I cant seem to work out how to place a fixed section on the sides, any advice is appreciated/

I would create a DIV, set the position to ‘fixed’ ‘left side’ and within that div, create links to the pages/sections you require. Seems to be the best way I can think of from the top of my head.

I goofed around a bit can seem to be able to make a reasonably functional one
