I run a small consulting business from my home. I am planning to register the business as a sole proprietor. I have already chosen a name for the business and, I think I just have to register it. While searching on how to register a business, I got to know that there a lot of rules on how to choose a business name. It is very important to choose a name that does not infringe upon other business names and their products while we are going for business registration in Ontario. And, they charge fines of up to $2,000 if they think that the name is misleading to the customers.
So, I was just wondering how to make sure that the name we have chosen has no such issues? Is there a way to check trademarks and copyrights? If someone can, please suggest me a tool to check registered trademarks.
Thanks in advance.
The best way to go is to hire a lawyer for a name search and a company registration As a single owner, the price would be around 1000$ or less. I live in Montreal and the laws/prices are pretty much the same!
Trust me, you really don’t want to do this step wrong… Ask a professional!
If you just want to do a name search, you can get the government to do it for you and get a certified proof that the name you want is legit. check here:
Hope that helps!
Thank you so much @donaldsv
